Brooklyn Heights Designer Showhouse

Brooklyn Heights Designer Showhouse

Brooklyn, NY

The cellar, an underground space typically an after-thought, was transformed into a dreamy hideaway of a media room.  The architecture of the space – specifically the various floor levels – became the starting point to re-invent the sunken room.  New floors were installed, then wrapped up the sides to the level of the original cellar floor, creating a datum line that both  references the historic townhouse’s floor while also creating a new zone of seating platforms.

The color palette takes inspiration from the interior of Brooklyn’s Kings Theatre – deep red and crimson tones, given a fresh take for a modern home.  Color-drenching the room with a pared-down palette creates a space both moody and minimal, immersing us completely.  Drapery in matching hues not only visually softens the space, but also cleverly screens off utilitarian spaces beyond and performs acoustically.  Media equipment was chosen with both aesthetics and functionality in mind.

Two main seating zones were created for viewing and listening together, while smaller nooks create opportunities to cozy up for solitude.  The space is a retreat, where you can unwind on your own, or with family and friends, a place to escape to from the real world upstairs.
