This was a full gut renovation of an abandoned brownstone in a Landmark (historic) district in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn. Two-phased renovation and reconfiguration of existing layout into Owner’s triplex (~2,700 sf on Parlor, Second & Third floors) above a Rental apartment (~900 sf on Basement/ Garden level) that also serves as an in-law suite for extended family visits.
A 100+ year old abandoned house was rehabilitated from foreclosure into a vibrant and light-filled home by maintaining the remaining historic details, while adding contemporary touches and finishes.
The main floor inverts the traditional layout, with the open plan a modern counterpoint to the original divisions of space. Interior and exterior meld together through an oversize folding glass door. Walnut kitchen cabinetry complements the original wood moldings that were stripped of layers of paint and refinished; while the new glass tile backsplash accentuates the original tile discovered while refurbishing the mantels.
Upstairs, the plan maintains the original layout, while creatively opening up smaller rooms to larger, maximizing natural light and circulation. Original pine subfloors were revealed and re-purposed as finished floors, as a nod to the past.
Thus, an old house becomes a new home through point and counterpoint between new and old, contemporary and historic, exterior and interior.
